What do you think of when you hear the word “Hyper”? I think of cars like the Lotus Ejiva, the McLaren P1, maybe the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Glitzy, bright chrome work, fancy wheels. Just what my MGB GT requires. So what do you expect from a paint that says “Hyper Silver”? I’m thinking that this will be some totally rad cool looking silver that would look good on the Ferrari LaFerrari that I just purchased. You know what I’m talking about!
Well, my lowly MGB GT just got the Dupli-Color Hyper Silver Wheel paint treatment on the rear two wheels. How does it look? Boring… boring… boring. I have been very pleased with most of the Dupli-Color paint I have bought. These Dupli-Color paints are not cheap in Canadian pesos but the paint is high quality and seems to contain heavy solids which makes for a very nice finish. I’ve used Dupli-Color before on the MGB engine and in a few areas on the Lotus. The paint covers well and seems to hold up in our rain forest with the gloomy winter climate. But… this “hyper silver” paint is boring. Have I said that before? There is nothing “hyper” about it. There is no life to it, I wouldn’t put it on my Subaru wheels. I certainly wouldn’t put it on my Lotus. Not even on my John Deere lawn tractor. This paint makes aluminum foil look exciting. It might be that it has a somewhat cool blue cast to it. Anyway, I should have read the reviews because this complaint about a cool cast comes up often.
In the photo below the newly painted rim is on the right. Yea, it looks great in that it’s newly painted but… it’s not exciting, not super hyper. In fact, it’s super boring, dull, lifeless. Even the old silver paint that was on the rims before I painted them has more life.
Will I spend another $30 to paint the other two wheels? Likely not. The hyper silver just doesn’t make me excited. I think I’ll be repainting my wheels again. It’s time to try something else, maybe some even more boring Honda silver that is… silver. Like… real silver. Fortunately I didn’t buy enough to paint the wheels on my Ferrari so I’m not out too many pesos this time. My Ferrari wheels look very silver anyway, best not mess them up.
