I bet most people will think that there’s no fiberglass in a 1967 MGB GT. I sure thought that would be the case. Well, here’s an interesting discovery. There is exactly one piece of fiberglass. The piece in question is the vinyl covered cover that fits over the rear hatch bolts that can be seen in the photo below.
Here’s the piece. When you look at the shape it’s easy to understand why it would be made in fiberglass but why is this the only piece on the whole car? There are other complex shapes that easily could have been glassed as well.
The piece is made from sprayed chopped mat fiberglass. It’s surprisingly well made and very light. I wonder how many pounds could be removed from the car by fabricating other parts in fiberglass as well?
All of the interior trim pieces I’m covering with a very nice looking marine black vinyl. I sure would like to go with leather but doing the Lotus interior in leather has cost big bucks. One car at a time is OK.
