Remember this beautiful water feature that I highlighted in MGB GT fuel tank update?

I solved the problem of a gas spewing feature on my MGB GT not being a good idea and bought a new fuel tank from British Parts Northwest. As usual, it just made sense to restore the area around the rear of the MG where the gas tank lives so I don’t have to reinstall it twice.
Fortunately there was only surface rust above the old tank, very much like the rest of the underbody. This was easily cleaned up, the light rust ground off and neutralized and a few layers of good quality undercoating applied.

What’s great about doing this area now is all that’s left to work on is the rear suspension and underbody areas directly around it. I have now managed to restore about 90% of the underbody without a lift, not bad!
The new gas tank was painted with what looks like a good quality black paint, likely very original looking. I decided to add a few layers of black undercoat similar to the rest of the car to toughen it up just a little more.

The installation went very smoothly and looks great. One more item to check off before the MGB GT is back on the road. My plan at this stage is to redo the rear suspension next spring but if the car isn’r running within a few months it might turn into a winter project.
