There was a discussion on the MG Experience web site the other day about cheap ratchet style jack stands that are ready to kill you. Harbor Freight has recalled millions of them due to possibilities of them collapsing and while many other companies sell them they still are a stupid design. I will not get under my cars using ratchet jack stands without additional backup supports.
My favourite type of jack stand has a pin in them that can’t loosen thus allowing the full weight of the car to crush your head. Yes, the pin could shear so buy something of good quality. I’m leaning towards non Chinese brands these days if safety is a factor.
When I posted this photo of the Esco jack stand on the MG web site it struck me how much it looked like the Eiffel Tower. I guess it comes down to engineering. Anyway, it makes you wonder how many tons the Eiffel Tower could support if you pressed down from the top.
