MG ads over the years have featured all sorts of cool sports. They have MG skate borders, MG scuba divers, MG skydivers and fighter jet pilots. Hell, they even raced MG’s. I’m probably missing a few sports here but you get the idea. Since the MGB was primarily sold in the USA and most sports cars were likely sold in Southern California at the time why don’t they have an MG car ad with a chick and a surfboard? Like California and surfing go together, right?
Maybe surfers were more the Volkswagen van crowd, long haired hippies with their cute chicks hanging out on a beach smoking a little weed and playing Bob Dylan tunes on their guitars. Not the MG type? Perhaps that’s why MG didn’t have tennis ads, ping pong ads, synchronized swimming ads. Maybe surfing just isn’t dangerous enough for the “MG driver”. Not enough great white sharks out in the waters?
Anyway, lots of other car companies got into the surfing scene in the 60’s and 70’s and some of the ads are pretty entertaining. They knew that California was surfin’ and surfers liked cool cars and cool times. Here’s a sample.
